The National Music Centre (NMC) returns with its cross-cultural concert series, Crossroads, in partnership with Sarb Akal Music Society on May 26, featuring a full day of events celebrating the culture and classical music of India.

Visitors can enjoy family-friendly, interactive daytime activities, such as yoga and traditional dance workshops, as well as an array of classical Indian instrument demonstrations. Daytime activities are included with regular admission. An evening performance will follow with legendary Hindustani classical vocalists Padmabhushan Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Misra. Tickets for the evening program cost $30 and are on sale now here

This edition of the series is entitled, Crossroads: Bhairav Se Bhairavi Tak. The name, Bhairav Se Bhairavi Tak, refers to the spectrum of notes in classical Indian music, also known as ragas. A melodic framework for improvisation and composition that is pleasing to the ear, it is believed that ragas are at the zenith of their harmonic, melodic and majestic splendour when rendered during particular times and seasons. The concept of Crossroads: Bhairav Se Bhairvi Tak is to present the spectrum of ragas from morning to evening.

“After the first installment of our Crossroads series, we are excited to share and explore the musical expressions of another cultural community in Canada,” said Adam Fox, NMC’s Director of Programs. “Indian classical music has a rich legacy, globally and in our own backyard, which we are eager to celebrate.”

Crossroads daytime schedule and activities:

10:00 am to 5:00 pm

  • Live performance from Academy of Indian Classical Music

  • Instrument demos, including harmonium, tabla, dhol, flute, and sitar presentations

  • Yoga and interactive dance workshops with Calgary Gida & Dance Academy and Shakthi Shethralaya Dance School

Crossroads evening schedule:

7:30 pm to 9:30 pm
  • Padmabhushan Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Misra Concert in Performance Hall

The inimitable duo of Padmabhushan Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Misra are two of today’s leading Indian classical vocalists of the North Indian khyal style. Born into a 300-year-old family lineage of distinguished musicians, the brothers belong to the Banaras Gharana, and began their musical studies at a very young age. Their mellifluous voices and masterly command over ancient and highly complex techniques have won them worldwide recognition.

“Bhairav Se Bhairavi Tak is more than just a concert,” said Pandit Rajan Misra. “It is about reaching out to like-minded people in various parts of the world; to engage in dialogue with other musicians from different countries, to participate in workshops and lectures, and be immersed in meditative music that takes us to a world of peace and bliss. We invite you to join in this journey of ragas.”

Daytime programs are included with admission to Studio Bell. Tickets for the evening program cost $30 and are on sale now here
